All registered chiropractors in Hong Kong have undergone rigorous training to enable them to safely and effectively administer chiropractic care.

There are currently no chiropractic educational institutions in Hong Kong that are recognized by the Hong Kong Chiropractors Council for registration as registered chiropractors. All practicing registered chiropractors are graduates of chiropractic programs that have been accredited by various overseas accrediting bodies, and are qualified to practice in the respective countries. Please refer to Chiropractors Council’s website for a list of accredited programs leading to qualifications recognized for registration in Hong Kong.

The curriculum in the USA and Canada confers a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, while that in the UK and Australia leads to a BSc/MSc of Applied Science (Chiropractic) or equivalents. Like general medical doctors, all chiropractors have undergone 6 to 8 years of post-secondary professional training.

","I am an office worker and sit all day long, is chiropractic right for me?","

Sitting for an extended period of time increases pressure on joints. Muscles are also strained from maintaining the same posture for prolonged periods of time.
As a result, one feels stiffness of muscles and joints.

Since our body is designed for motion, our movement serves as nutrition to our musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic adjustment frees up restricted joints and relaxes tight muscles and restores normal joint movements and puts them into motion again. It is often hard to correct a bad posture even if one wants to because spine stuck in poor posture for too long; joints are locked.

Spinal adjustments unlock stuck joints and allows for a freer spine, after which one would find it easier to maintain a straight spine than before.

","What is the risk of injury with spinal manipulation?","

Spinal manipulation (a high-velocity, low-amplitude force directed to specific joints) requires the integration of anatomical knowledge, biomechanical understanding, and fine manual technique. As with any medical procedures, there is a risk associated with the chiropractic adjustment. The highest concern is related to injuries after a cervical adjustment: according to research, there is a one in one million chance resulting in cerebrovascular accidents, with half having a fatal outcome. Having said that, it is worth noting that “compared to other treatments used for similar conditions, these rates are 200 times lower than the rates reported for gastrointestinal bleeding due to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Gabriel SE et al. 1991, Dabbs V et al. 1995, Deyo RA et al. 1992, Malter AD et al. 1998). Moreover, the majority of individuals performing the maneuvers that resulted in the above injuries have not gone through professional trainings as chiropractors. ","I want to ensure that my young child is growing and developing normally. Is chiropractic care right for him?","

The growing spinal canal also provides protection to the growing nervous system. Imagine, every trauma (whether at birth or childhood accidents, etc.) or incorrect posture may cause the body to adapt negatively, which will have a profound impact on growth; hence directly or indirectly causing neck pain, low back pain, headache and other common pain conditions among adults.

Chiropractic care can ensure the normal position and mobility of joints, allowing the growing spine to perform its natural functions. Children's bodies have strong adaptability, so the treatment effect is generally more obvious than that of adults. Furthermore, it is very important to instill spinal health awareness from an early age, just like instilling dental awareness in young children. It is recommended that spinal examinations be performed every 6 months throughout childhood. This is especially important in diagnosing early-stage scoliosis as they enter puberty.

","I want to prepare myself for a smooth pregnancy, is chiropractic right for me?","

Pregnancy increases loading on not just the heart / lungs and other organs, but also the joints and muscles supporting the spine. With increasing weight and weight shift, there is increased demand on the spine. In fact, 80% of pregnant women suffer from back pain due to various reasons. Hormonal changes can cause loosened ligaments which can lead to sacroiliac joint sprains and hip and lower back muscle strains. The upper back and neck can also be affected by postural changes such as slouching.

Chiropractic treatments during pregnancy are safe, effective and has no side effects as opposed to drugs. Chiropractic adjustments can help maintain the stability as well as the flexibility of the spine during pregnancy. A normalized nervous system can also have a direct effect on the healthy growth of the fetus. Furthermore, regular spinal adjustments during pregnancy helps optimize the mobility of the spine and pelvic joints, which would facilitate a smooth delivery process.

","I want to maintain good health after retirement. Is chiropractic/chiropractic treatment suitable for me?","

Retirement marks the beginning of the “golden years”: don’t let pain keep you from enjoying the things and places you’ve always dreamed of doing. At this age, treating pain that has been accumulated for many years, such as low back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc., will be more effective because some of the factors that make the pain worse have been eliminated (such as sitting at a desk all day). Now the body can finally be \"released\" from the stress that has accumulated over the years. Spinal adjustment can restore joint mobility. If at the same time, the body can relearn correct posture and movement patterns, it has great potential in retaining or even enhancing its strength, endurance and vitality.

It’s never too late to start taking care of your spinal health and prevent further deterioration. Common degenerative spinal diseases include disc herniation, sciatica, spinal stenosis, etc. A chiropractor will conduct a detailed examination and diagnosis based on your individual condition. Chiropractic treatment is a conservative treatment option that is widely considered safe and effective.

Since the risks of surgery increase as a person ages, surgery should be avoided if it is not necessary. ","Are there any scientific evidence for chiropractic treatments?","

Scientific research has shown that spinal manipulation, a common technique applied by chiropractors, is particularly effective for treating low back pain,sciatica, neck pain and headache. It might be a safer alternative to opioids and other pain relievers. Guidelines from the American College of Physicians recommend spinal manipulation for acute and chronic low back pain as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for pain relief and restoration of function.

","Is chiropractic a legitimate healthcare profession in Hong Kong?","

Yes. Hong Kong is the first and only region in Asia that has established statutory legislation of the chiropractic profession. The other regulated healthcare professions are medicine, dentistry, and traditional Chinese medicine. Hong Kong Chiropractors’ Council is the regulatory body of practicing chiropractors in Hong Kong and its committees ensure that public’s interests are served.

","Are there any contraindications to spinal manipulations?","

There are certain instances when spinal manipulation may not be suitable: acute trauma, bone fracture, spinal infection, advanced osteoporosis or metastatic bone disease (bone cancer). Your chiropractor would review the patient’s history carefully to determine if other treatment options should be considered, or referral for further investigations is appropriate.

","When I crack my joints I feel much better: is it the same as a chiropractic adjustment?","

No. Because branches from the same nerve may supply more than one level of the spine, the discomfort originating from one segment may be felt over several segments. However, when you perform self-manipulation, it's usually the hypermobile joints (joints that are moving too much) that are released, while the restricted joints remain restricted. Skilled manipulations performed by a chiropractor are specifically and carefully delivered to the joints that truly need it. The effects of the manipulation are also more longer-lasting and the urge to self-manipulate will subside.

","What is the popping sound after an adjustment?","

","Is it safe to undergo chiropractic treatment if I'm pregnant?","

Yes. Pregnant women often experience weight gain and changes in their postures that can cause pain in the back and pelvis.

","脊椎矯正治療有何禁忌症？","

脊醫在施行脊骨矯正前必須先仔細審閱患者的病歷和做詳細的檢查以作出診斷。儘管脊骨矯正能有效舒緩很多脊椎相關的痛症，但在以下情況下不宜進行脊骨矯正：急性創傷、骨折、脊椎感染、晚期骨質疏鬆症或轉移性骨疾（骨癌）等。脊醫會根據臨床判斷採取其他適合的治療方案，或轉介其他醫生作進一步醫治。

","我喜歡快速地扭動脊椎關節，好像也能減輕不適。這與脊醫治療的成效相同嗎？","

不同。每一脊骨關節都有痛感神經供應以傳遞痛楚或不適的感覺，而同一條痛感神經可能供應多於一節關節。當某一脊骨關節存在功能性移位時，其引起不適的範圍可能會覆蓋至以上或以下一至兩節，即是並不很準確。當您自行扭動關節時，可能只鬆弛到一些已活動過多的關節，而活動受限的關節仍未能有效得到舒緩。因此即使有舒緩的感覺，效果亦會很短暫。反之，脊醫會針對真正有需要復位的關節，小心進行專業矯正，精準地對症下藥，並達到長效舒緩。

","脊醫進行脊椎治療時，關節會發出「噗」一聲，是怎麼回事？","
